Now Open at Sequim Museum and Arts through May

April 1 (no foolin'!) is the first day of "Colors of the Pacific Northwest," open through May at Sequim Museum and Arts, 11-4 Wednesday-Saturday and from 5 to 8 on the first Friday of each month. Entrance is complimentary. Several of us Peninsula Fiber Artists members will be on hand at the First Friday art walks and throughout April and May when tour groups visit. Some of us will be selling small items (origami-embellished note cards in my case) and others will simply be on hand to explain inspiration, materials and techniques.

Coming Soon in Port Townsend

What fun can you have with another artist's discards? That's what we at Peninsula Fiber Artists discovered this winter, when we anonymously swapped bags of unfinished objects, unloved materials or projects we were ready to pass on. Come April, you can see the results of our adventures at the Fiber Habit walk-by exhibit at 675 Tyler in uptown Port Townsend. Many of the projects are for sale.

Below is a glance at the pieces in the bag I received. The batik at lower right became the front of a tote bag, with the back sewn from the purpose at lower left ($35). The piece in the middle, a sort of "confetti," became the front of a clutch-style bag ($35). The handmade papers were mounted on a black-painted canvas and embellished with an origami kimono folded from paper I had painted myself ($50). (Yes, the rules allow us to supplement the UFO materials with stuff from our own stash.)

Upcoming Exhibits in Port Townsend and Sequim

I have a bag or two on display in the Fiber Habit walk-by exhibit at 675 Tyler St. in uptown Port Townsend in January. Below, the bag created with fabric I designed using scans of 1940s magazines. Truly one-of-a-kind. You'll also see two cross-body bags, one with "blossoms" and the other trimmed in silver mesh. Zippered closures to keep phone and cash safe when you're partying.

Later this spring Peninsula Fiber Artists members will fill the exhibit with projects inspired by UFOs: we filled paper bags with UnFinished Objects, traded them anonymously and then let these hand-me-downs inspire us. We had so much fun with this project a year or two ago that we decided to try it again, and oh, the results already reported this time! And more to come...So many projects that we're expecting multiple exhibits, possibly in multiple venues. (Stay tuned.)

In April we will fill the gallery walls of the Sequim Museum & Arts with "Colors of the Pacific Northwest," both wall-hung pieces and some three-dimensional. The exhibit will be open through May, so you can meet some of the artists at two, yes, two, Free Friday Art Walks, April 3 and May 1, starting at 5 p.m. each evening. I will show "Colors of Sea and Shore," a 14 x 61-inch mesh piece you can swath yourself in for instant glamor (imagine it over the little black dress or a cashmere sweater) or suspend on a wall or in a window to catch rays of sunshine.

All of my pieces described here are available for purchase.

And in late summer and fall, as for many years, Peninsula Fiber Artists will again be at the meadery at Wilderbee Farm in Port Townsend. Watch sda-np.com for information on that exhibit and our others.
